September 21, 2001: " the freedom of satire "

gawd, i love Jon Stewart.

amongst all the overly sympathic, overly emotional, overly sentimental reactions to september 11 in the media, especially Subway's commercial that seems strangely self-serving, his simple, funny, sad, and basic Daily Show monologue was perfect. he sniffed through a speech that started out by saying how thankful he had been to be able to "sit at the back of the nation ... and throw spitballs" and how proud he was to be able to have the freedom of satire, and then told us why he thought we should grieve but not despair. it was nice to watch someone who understood the gravity of the moment but was still able to laugh a bit at how sad it was.

"nothing like a good cry," he grinned.
