June 16, 2008: " Service, food and baseball "

Corinne's doing well in Haiti, which has put everyone's mind at ease. (Or mostly so.) The emails she's sent out make me wish I was there. Service is woefully lacking in my life. I can only steal so much good karma by proxy.

We've talked about making annual trips to somewhere to help out when our yet-to-be-produced kids are old enough. One of Corinne's friends told her about a regular trip to Kenya that is specifically organized for families. Everyone helps out with something, from medical care, to construction, to ... well, I'm a little lacking on the details but there's a job for everyone. It would provide an adventure but also a lot of perspective. We live pretty comfortably and I don't want to raise human beings who don't appreciate that.

So that's the idea. Considering, however, that I haven't so far involved service in my own life and don't actually have little human beings to care for yet, we'll see how well we follow through.

Back here in the drudge of everyday life, I spent much of the weekend working on a paper about e-commerce. My boss and I have had months to work on it but only really put effort into it in the last few weeks. And now we're realizing we'd really like those couple months back. Unfortunately, there's a big webcast (that I have present ... eep!) in a couple weeks that ties into the paper so it now needs to be done. We're squeezing out what extra time we can but it may go out imperfect. Darn.

Somewhere in the midst of all that, I had a little fun, too. Amber came up in the middle of her very busy weekend of fun to go to a Giants game on Saturday. (She sent me a text message with all her plans that I couldn't decipher because of all its complexity.) They lost but it was fun to hang out with my sister, cheer on the ever heartbreaking team, and eat SHEBOYGAN! Mmm, Sheboygan.

Oh, and I saw Julie and Geoff Saturday morning as well. They were on a three-day whirlwind foodie tour of the Bay Area, indulging in good eats for every meal (and a few in between.) Apparently, San Diego is severely lacking in decent food. When I hitch a ride on their culinary choo-choo train, we went to Yank Sing and had dim sum until I essentially could not eat another bite. No more room at the inn! It was so good, though, and I pretty much didn't need to eat for the rest of the day.

I also ordered my parts for my new computer. This one is doing fine but it's over four-years-old and, considering how much time I spent in front of it, in desperate need of replacement. I'm building a fancy new box that hopefully will be easier to upgrade than this thing. And hopefully a hell of a lot more quiet! I swear I'm losing hearing from all the fan noise I'm exposed to every day.

So, that's it. Missing my girl, working too much, full immersed in foggy San Francisco "summer". Can't complain.
