ok, this is ridiculous. i am so sore from playing many, many hours of softball yesterday that i can't muster enough strength to cough properly. it is the proverbial last straw in a morning that began rudely and painfully. from a nice, healthy bruise on my glove hand from catching a few speeding line drives to the very odd pain in my butt cheeks from running the bases at break-neck speed to the sore abdominal muscles that keep me from coughing with any conviction, i find myself hobbling around the apartment like an old man.
no regrets, though, of course. i had a hell of a good time yesterday. sure, it was some stupid "singles" event that did absolutely nothing for my dating life but seeing as i only really showed up to play softball, that didn't matter much. it was all about the game. i haven't played softball in probably ten years. and i suck at it. well, i'm alright. i can sort of catch and i can usually hit the ball. there are just times when, well, i fall over backwards trying to catch the ball because i totally misjudged it. trust me, i suck. but that doesn't keep me from having heaps fun and getting my competitive juices flowing. so it was a blast. i only lament having to try and make idle chit-chat with a bunch of people i didn't know nor had much desire to know while between games.
that night, i had plans with a friend who was going to drive down from Davis but she was too broke to even afford gas money and cancelled on me. at first i was a little disappointed because with Yve staying home Friday night with her alien baby growing inside her navel (she claims it was intestinal food poisoning but i know THE TRUTH) and now this, i'd seen most of my weekend plans disappear. but it was probably for the best since i was a little fried from my day and my friend from Davis probably would have wanted to go out and whoop it up. plus, i called up Julie, whom i went to college with and who i think is the cat's pajamas but haven't seen in almost four years except for a very recent reconnection, and she was very much in the want and need to go out to a movie. i picked her up on the bike and we went to see Road to Perdition. good flick. very slow but in a good way. however, that was the NOISIEST theater i have ever had the displeasure of sitting in. the guy behind us talked loudly throughout the movie despite us reminding him repeatedly to shut the hell up. he also dropped glass bottles, opened loud, crinkly packages, burped very loudly, and generally made an ass of himself. (Julie thinks he was drunk, i think he was mentally ill.) also, several cell phones went off for a good ten seconds each, one baby was making loud baby noises, three different sets of people walked into the apparent wrong theater talking loudly thinking their movie hadn't started, and about half the theater population seemed to have emphysema or some other affliction that caused them to hack away like they were about to die. now, if it'd been some explosion-ridden action flick, i wouldn't had noticed. but given the soft, quiet nature of most of the movie, it was all i could do to not stand up and scream, "shut the hell up, the lot of you! especially you with the cough and ESPECIALLY you with the belching and the talking!"
ahem.
afterwards, and after i discovered that i'd lost YET ANOTHER pair of expensive sunglasses somewhere between the bike and my seat in the theater, we went to Mel's for ice cream sundaes and fries. Julie's idea and lots of fun. we were both a little worn from our days (Julie had spent hers surfing until she couldn't paddle any more) and nearly fell asleep at the table. so i took her home, stayed for a quick chat and then headed home to my very soft, very horizontal bed.
as for today, i plan on going over to see the start of the Kings' Classic ride with Dennis. (since my Vespa isn't running and my motorbike needs its fluids changed, i won't actually be riding this year.) then i think he wants to go shopping for something he probably doesn't need and certainly can't afford. and after that, and a couple other errands, i hope to get some time laying in the sun, reading my book, and maybe taking a nap if i feel up to it. it is Sunday, after all.
