we all agreed, Star Wars was boring!
the lumbering story line, the fast and choppy cuts between scenes, the lack of any real character development, and could someone please help George Lucas write dialog that actually sounds like two people talking?
now i'm a huge Star Wars fan. i love the stuff. every quarter in college, a group of friends and i would get together to watch the whole trilogy straight through. but this new stuff is crap. and even Episode I was more entertaining than this. we all thought the first flick had trouble standing up against the original three but it far outshined this tedium.
and what were all these people who loved the movie watching? apparently, Rolling Stone thought it was the best Star Wars movie after Empire Strikes Back. guh?? someone else wrote, "it was fucking amazing! i actually got chills up my spine in a few parts." you have got to be kidding me.
don't get me wrong, it wasn't wholly unwatchable. the Obi Wan seeking out the assassin sub-plot was great. i loved picking out hints to the originals (e.g. "this is my girlfriend Beru", the picture of the Death Star, etc.) the beginning of the clone war was visually stunning. and watching Yoda kick ass was pretty cool. but did you really have to spend quite so much time on the forbidden romance thing, George? it made the movie drag and drag.
i still begrudge him for a few things left over from Episode I. like, gag, Jar Jar Binks. or the whole "midichloride" explanation of the Force. couldn't it have been a little more mystical and a little less science? and casting Samuel L. as a jedi. i adore Sam Jackson but he's kind of the opposite of a jedi. i suppress laughter when he says some suppose-to-be line of wisdom. all i can think of is, "sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie but i wouldn't know because i wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker."
but, yeah, mostly i'm just bothered that Lucas has lost his way so significantly and trashed the good name he created. it's sad, really.
in any case, go see the movie. it's Star Wars, after all. just don't expect much. and pray for the soul of Episode III.
